I have lived on the North Shore since 1990. My husband Andrew and I have raised our two boys here. I grew up in White Rock.
I was the General Manager for a lingerie company for seven years and decided I wanted to pursue some of my own ideas so I started Kim Allan Silk Corp. three years ago. The business has doubled in sales volume each year.

I had a few things working in my favour when I started my company. I had great business mentors who helped me in the beginning. They gave me important financial, marketing, and visionary advice. I already knew the industry quite well so I was able to secure orders very quickly as people trusted me. My customers include over 100 lingerie stores across Canada plus I am selling to retail sports stores. My product line is great for a number of uses. It works well under running and hiking clothes and many motorcycle enthusiasts wear silk under their leathers. The movie industry is another big customer as the silk is thin and keeps everyone warm while working on shoots.
I have another revenue stream through my website; www.kimallansilk.com. It is geared to individual customers who live all over the world. I send Kim Allan Silk to customers in the US, Britain, Europe and Australia.
I am now in my fourth year of business. Twice a year I add new colours and styles to my product line which keeps it fresh.
My advice to new entrepreneurs is to listen to people who have succeeded in their own businesses. Learn from their lessons. Keep your overhead low and work hard. |
